FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, DC – The Independent Center released a survey conducted in the southeastern states of Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. The survey finds neither candidate with more than a two-point lead in any state. The poll was conducted by the Bullfinch Group.

In head-to-head matchups, former president Donald Trump leads Vice President Kamala Harris 48 to 47 percent in Florida. Vice President Harris leads Trump 49 to 48 percent in North Carolina and 49 to 47 percent in Georgia. When the three states are aggregated, the candidates are in a dead heat, 48 to 48 percent.

The Independent Center asked respondents to describe their vote as a vote for their preferred candidate or a vote against the other candidate. Interestingly, Trump garnered more protest votes against Harris than vice versa.

Bullfinch Group president Brett Loyd said, “Looking beyond the horse race polls in these states, it is clear that Americans are hungry for ‘more options’. A third of likely voters say there is no chance they would vote for Harris because her candidacy is a dumpster fire, and a third say they would not vote for Trump because his candidacy is a dumpster fire.”

Brett Loyd continued, “A plurality of voters do not believe that their voice and opinions are being heard by elected officials, and a majority of voters think our election cycle is one that other countries are laughing at. However, when we get away from the partisan duopoly that people have such problems with, we see that nearly three-quarters of likely voters are favorable to ‘a politician that works with both sides of the aisle’, and plurality of likely voters would consider voting for an independent candidate if there was a viable, ‘normal’ candidate.”

The online survey of n1,800 likely voters (n600 in each of GA, FL, NC) was conducted from September 20-23, 2024. The full survey has a margin of error of ± 2.31 percent. Independent Center conducted the survey in conjunction with The Bullfinch Group, an accredited, nonpartisan polling company. Fielding quotas implemented in each state to ensure representative samples on gender, age, race, political affiliation, and geographic area.
