The Independent Center Recognizes Sen. Alan Simpson: Bipartisan Champion for Fiscal Sanity
Washington, DC – Upon hearing of Senator Alan Simpson’s passing today, the Independent Center’s President, Lura Forcum, had this to say:
“We are saddened to learn of the passing of Senator Alan Simpson. He was truly a pioneer in addressing our nation’s financial health. Regardless of whether one agrees with its recommendations, the bipartisan Simpson–Bowles Commission was the last meaningful attempt to set our nation on a sustainable course. The commission unified independents, Republicans, Democrats, and private citizens in seeking practical solutions to America’s debt crisis.”
“Senator Simpson was ahead of his time in recognizing the burden that runaway federal debt places on young people—a point he consistently made in public discussions. He understood that younger voters were essential for challenging the entrenched interests that sit idly by while our debt suffocates future generations.”
“We need a leader like Senator Simpson now more than ever. Millennials and Gen Z overwhelmingly support modernizing the factors driving our debt. In fact, 76% of them agree that Social Security needs to be modernized. This issue is no longer a third rail. The question is, will anyone in Congress today step up like Alan Simpson did?”
