No. New Jersey has closed primaries. A closed primary is a type of primary election in which a voter must affiliate formally with a political party in advance of the election date in order to participate in that party's primary. Independent voters are not allowed to participate in any state with a closed primary system without first registering as a partisan.
New Jersey offers in-person, by mail, and online voter registration. Additionally, it provides automatic voter registration and no-excuse absentee-by-mail voting. New Jersey has five days of early in-person voting. Voters must be registered to vote at least 21 days before an election. Party primaries are semi-open. Registered partisans are relegated to their party primaries. However, the good news for independents is that they can choose which primary to vote in without registering as partisans.
Yes, it can be. In some states, independent voters face barriers like closed primaries that exclude them unless they change their party registration each election. Others offer open primaries, allowing all voters to participate regardless of party. Some states make registration seamless with same-day options, while others require voters to plan weeks or even months ahead.
Navigating these challenges takes awareness and action—but that’s exactly why the Independent Center exists. We’re here to empower independent voters, break down barriers, and build a movement for real change. Join us and make your voice heard.
