No. Tennessee has closed primaries. A closed primary is a type of primary election in which a voter must affiliate formally with a political party in advance of the election date in order to participate in that party's primary. Independent voters are not allowed to participate in any state with a closed primary system without first registering as a partisan.
Code Section: Tenn. Code Ann. § 2–7–115
Unfortunately for independents in the volunteer state, there is a closed primary system. That said, there is no party registration system for the state. A voter must affirm their party affiliation at the time of the primary. Voters can take advantage of an online voter registration system. Voters do need to be registered to vote at least 30 days before an election. Tennessee does offer 15 days of no-excuse in-person voting. However, absentee by mail has certain requirements that must be fulfilled.
Yes, it can be. In some states, independent voters face barriers like closed primaries that exclude them unless they change their party registration each election. Others offer open primaries, allowing all voters to participate regardless of party. Some states make registration seamless with same-day options, while others require voters to plan weeks or even months ahead.
Navigating these challenges takes awareness and action—but that’s exactly why the Independent Center exists. We’re here to empower independent voters, break down barriers, and build a movement for real change. Join us and make your voice heard.
